SEATTLE - The Washington baseball team broke out for four runs in the fifth inning to break a 1-1 tie and held on to beat Portland, 5-1, in a non-conference game Wednesday at Husky Ballpark.
With two on and two out, junior third baseman Michael Done belted a double to center field to send home Marc Rittenhouse and Tyler Davidson. With Done aboard at second, shortstop Tila Reynolds homered to left-center to make it 5-1.
Reliever Jeff Petersen, one of four Husky freshman pitchers to throw Wednesday, picked up the win, improving to 2-0 on the year with a two-inning, no-hit outing. Clay Johnson, the fourth of those freshmen, threw the last three innings to earn his first save. In the ninth, Portland loaded the bases with one out, but Johnson fanned Kory Casto and Travis Hanson to end the game.
Washington, a winner of five of its last six games and eight of its last 10, improved to 29- 16 on the season while Portland fell to 20-31. Washington won all four meetings this season against the Pilots.
UP starter Steve Chamberlain (0-5) suffered the loss, allowing five earned runs on seven hits over five innings. He walked six and struck out seven.
Rittenhouse finished the day having reached base all five times up. He walked twice, singled twice and reached on an error. He also scored twice and stole a base. First baseman Bryan Johnson walked three times and doubled in his four plate appearances.
The Pilots scored their lone run in the second when catcher Brock Griffin singled to send home Matt Hollod. Second baseman Cory Lunde led the Pilot offense, going 3-for-4. Eric Hull was 2-for-4.
The Huskies take two days off before returning to action Saturday, when they begin a three-game Pac-10 series against Arizona State at Husky Ballpark. All three games begin at 1:00 p.m.
