SEATTLE - The Great White North will welcome the Huskies next season.
For the second time in its history, the Washington women's basketball team will play in the Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout in Anchorage, one of the most unique events in college hoops. The other three teams rounding out the tournament are Kent State, San Jose State and the host Alaska-Anchorage.
The Huskies open the 33rd annual Shootout against Kent State on Tuesday, Nov. 23 at Sullivan Arena, housed on the Alaska-Anchorage campus. Should UW win, they would play in the championship game on Nov. 24 against the San Jose State - Alaska-Anchorage winner. Otherwise, the team would play in the third-place game on that same day.
"We're extremely excited to play in the 2010 The Great Alaska Shootout," said Washington coach Tia Jackson. "Some of the best teams in the country have played in this tournament over the years; and we feel extremely fortunate to be participating this year."
Washington is no stranger to Kent State, having played at the Mid-American Conference school in 2006, an 81-78 win by the Golden Flashes in overtime. Kent State finished 20-11 last year and made the first round of the WNIT, where they lost to Michigan. The Golden Flashes and the Spartans are making their first-ever Shootout appearance. The Huskies finished in 6th place in 1982.
Last year, Washington made the postseason for the first time in Jackson's tenure on Montlake, making the quarterfinals of the inaugural WBI. The team ended the 2009-10 season with a 13-18 record.
