SEATTLE - Sophomore starting pitcher Jorden Merry ran his consecutive scoreless innings streak to 22 and two-thirds innings before allowing a run, but still hung on for the victory as the Washington baseball team posted its seventh straight win, beating Cal State Northridge, 2-1, Saturday at Husky Ballpark.
Merry, a righty from Pasco, Wash., threw eight innings, giving up the lone run when he balked with a runner on third base with two outs in the eighth. Nick Hagadone worked the ninth inning for his fourth save.
Merry (4-1) allowed just four hits, and one of them came when a ground ball hit a Northridge baserunner for the third out of an inning. He walked one and struck out six as Washington moved over .500 for the first time this season, improving to 9-8.
The game remained scoreless until the Huskies broke through with two runs in the bottom of the fourth. The UW loaded the bases on three consecutive singles to open the inning and Matt Hague scored on a fielder's choice grounder from Brian Pearl. Washington made it 2-0 when Curt Rindal came across on a Joey Dunn sacrifice fly.
In the eighth, Northridge scored their lone run when catcher Jowen-James Murray-Thornton led off with a single, moved to second on a bunt and to third on a groundout before scoring on the balk.
Northridge starter Jimmy Jolicouer (4-2) suffered the loss despite allowing just two runs over seven innings. He gave up five hits and one walk while striking out eight as the Matadors lost their seventh straight game to drop to 11-15 on the season.
The series concludes with a noon game Sunday at Husky Ballpark. Live video and live stats for the game will be available at gohuskies.com.
