Box Score

SEATTLE - Brigham Young hit three home runs over the last two innings, including a decisive grand slam from first baseman Kasey Ko in the eighth, and handed the Washington baseball team an 11-7 loss Saturday in the final game of a three-game, non-conference series at sunny Husky Ballpark.

BYU (15-20) avoided a series sweep with the win while the Huskies (23-10) saw their streak of 15 straight wins in non-conference play broken. Washington got homers from Bradley Boyer and Brian Pearl, who went 3-for-4 with a double and two RBI.

Cougars reliever Jared Miller (4-1), who worked only two-thirds of an inning and surrendered two home runs, picked up the win. Husky senior reliever Elliott Cribby (1-4) gave up all three of the homers to take the loss.

The Huskies, who had only scored seven first-inning runs all season entering Saturday's game, took the early lead with a pair of runs in the opening frame. After Doug Cherry walked and Andy Lentz doubled, sacrifice flies from Kyle Conley and Troy Scott gave the UW a 2-0 lead.

However, the Cougars replied with two of their own in the top of the second. After a single and a walk, a wild pitch put runners at second and third for catcher Bryce Ayoso, who slapped a single into right field to score them both.

In the bottom of the third, the UW went back in front. Lentz singled, moved to second on a balk and then scored on a Conley single. BYU had a good chance to draw even or take a lead when Merry walked the bases loaded in the fifth, but Kent Walton bounced into a double play to end the inning.

The following inning, however, BYU did draw even as Dan Vargas reached on a two-out double and scored on a single from Ko.

Washington didn't wait to go back in front, however. Jake Rife led off the bottom of the sixth with a single. He stole second and moved to third when the catcher's throw trickled into center field and then scored on a Joey Dunn sacrifice fly.

In the seventh, the Huskies played add on. With two outs, Scott doubled, ending Torgerson's day. Miller came on to face left-handed hitting Pearl, who belted his second homer of the season to right, increasing the lead to 6-3.

Once more, however, BYU had an answer. In the top of the eighth, UW reliever walked one and hit another before being replaced by fellow freshman Geoff Brown, who walked the only batter he faced to load the bases. Cribby then came on and walked Dan Vargas to force in one before Ko belted a grand slam to straightaway center field to put BYU in front and Brandon Cluff went back-to-back with a solo homer into the bullpen in left, making it a 9-6 Cougars lead.

In the bottom of the eighth, Boyer, who had come on as a defensive replacement in the top of the inning, led off with his third homer of the season.

In the ninth, BYU got another home, a two-run blast from Sean McNaughton, to lengthen the lead to 11-7.

The Huskies hit the road for their next five games. First up is a two-game series at Gonzaga Monday (6:00 p.m.) and Tuesday (3:00 p.m.) before they head to California for a three-game, Pac-10 series next Friday through Sunday. The last two games from Cal will air live on KKNW AM-1150. Online-only broadcasts of both Gonzaga games and the Friday game at Cal will be available at gohuskies.com.
