IRVINE, Calif. - The Washington baseball team made a season-high six errors and had its 11-game winning streak broken Saturday night, falling to UC Irvine, 8-3, in the second game of a three-game, non-conference series at Anteater Ballpark.
The Huskies' streak tied for the longest in the tenure of 11th-year head coach Ken Knutson and was the longest in school history against exclusively Division I opposition. Washington fell to 15-7 with the loss.
After being held to four hits in a 2-0 win Friday night, the Huskies managed only seven Saturday as UCI starter Brett Smith improved to 5-1 with the win. Smith worked six and two-thirds, allowing three earned runs on five hits.
Washington's streak of three straight shutouts and 29 consecutive scoreless innings came to a quick end as the Anteaters scored a run in the first. With two outs and none on, Chris Klemm got it started with a single. Klemm scored when catcher Mark Wagner belted a double down the left-field line, giving UCI a 1-0 lead after one inning.
The Huskies didn't take long to tie the score as junior DH Chad Boudon led off the second inning by pulling a home run just inside the left-field foul pole. It was the sixth homer of the year for the Shorewood High grad and Hawaii transfer.
Irvine (10-15) took the lead back with a three-run second inning. Matt Falk reached on two-base throwing error by UW second baseman Greg Isaacson and moved to third on a Matt Fisher single. Jon Horwitz followed with a double down the left field line and, after the ball was misplayed by UW left fielder Justin Drake, two runners scored and Horwitz ended up at third. Horwitz made it 4-1, scoring on a groundout.
The Huskies, who hadn't made an error in the previous four games, committed their third of the game in the third inning, leading to two more UCI runs. Klemm tripled to lead off and Husky pitcher Jeff Petersen threw wildly to first on a Wagner bunt, allowing Klemm to score and Wagner to reach second. Wagner eventually moved to third and scored on a sacrifice fly, increasing the Anteaters' lead to 6-1.
In the seventh, the Huskies took advantage of two errors by UCI outfielder to post two runs, cutting the lead to 6-3, but left the bases loaded, but the Anteaters added two more unearned runs in the bottom of the inning.
Petersen, who threw a one-hit shutout last Saturday vs. Cal State Northridge, suffered the loss to fall to 1-2 on the year. Lefty David Dowling went four and two-thirds in relief, allowing two unearned runs on three hits.
The Huskies and Anteaters conclude the three-game series Sunday at 1:00 p.m. The UCI radio broadcast of the game can be heard via gohuskies.com.
