SEATTLE - Washington women's basketball signee Katie Collier tore the anterior cruciate ligament in her knee during a summer workout and will miss the upcoming 2012-13 season.

Collier had been expected to be an immediate contributor to the Huskies after earning a raft of honors last season, including the first McDonald's All-America selection in program history. The Covington, Wash., native accomplished all this at Seattle Christian despite a grueling recovery from acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL), a type of blood/bone marrow cancer.

The 6-3 Collier was also the Seattle Times Player of the Year and the No. 4-ranked forward according to ESPN HoopGurlz, as well as the leading scorer in Seattle Christian history. Those accolades made Collier one of the most high-profile recruits in Washington history.

"I feel terrible because of all she has gone through this past year," said UW coach Kevin McGuff. "But at the same time, if there's anyone who can handle this it's her. She'll be incredibly diligent in her rehab after surgery and no doubt in my mind she'll come back stronger and better than ever."

Collier is expected to have surgery at some point in the next few weeks after the swelling from her injury has subsided.
