Box Score

SEATTLE - Gonzaga scored a run in the ninth to break a 2-2 tie and held on to beat Washington, 3-2, in the Huskies' final home game of the 2001 season Tuesday at rain-soaked Husky Ballpark. The second game of the scheduled doubleheader was cancelled due to rain and will not be made up.

The Bulldogs (27-25) next travel to Pepperdine for a best-of-three playoff for the West Coast Conference championship. The Huskies (29-20) head to Tucson this weekend for a three-game Pac-10 series at Arizona to close out the year.

In the ninth, the Bulldogs had runners at second and third with one out before UW reliever Tyler Shepple fanned John Gebbers for the second out. Shepple was seemingly out of the jam when pinch hitter Kyle Rasjich hit a hard grounder to first, but first baseman Bryan Johnson misplayed the hot shot for an error, allowing Nate Gold to score the go- ahead run.

Shepple, who allowed only one hit and struck out three in two innings of relief, suffered the hard-luck loss to fall to 0-5 on the year. In the bottom of the ninth, Husky sophomore Tyler Davidson lead off with a double, but was stranded at second.

Phil Banta (1-0) worked four scoreless relief innings, allowing only two hits, for the victory. GU starter Errol Simonitsch gave up two runs (one earned) in five innings. Husky starter Clay Johnson surrendered only two hits and a pair of unearned runs over seven innings of work.

The Husky starting batting order included only one regular starter, though freshman Steve Ramsey came up big, finishing with two doubles and an RBI in three at bats. The first baseman from Redmond had only had two prior hits in 10 career at bats. His double in the third drove home fellow freshman Mike Wagner to give the Huskies a 2-0 lead.

Gonzaga tied it at 2-2 in the fifth when an error opened the door for two unearned runs. Gebbers reached on an error and scored on a Danny Evans double. Evans eventually scored on a sacrifice fly by catcher Brian Munhall.
