Washington vs. Michigan December 9, 2005 Post-Game Quotes

Head Coach June Daugherty General Comments: "We're excited about this victory. We had a lot of trouble with Michigan last year and we didn't feel very good about letting that game get away up in Ann Arbor. This game has been circled on the calendar and I think our players played hard tonight. It was great to see us outrebound them and defensively force some turnovers and that allowed us to get into our running game. I thought we played really hard and solid. It was a physical game and I thought our kids responded really well."

On the difference between the game against Michigan last year and this year: "40 minutes. We were up at the half there, it was close, and we went into the locker room and didn't come back out with a fire. We didn't like being tagged a one half team last year and that was something that we worked hard to improve upon. We gave them a game of 40 tonight and that was the difference."

On three point shooting: "We work on shooting a lot and we really believe in our shooters. We've showed a lot of improvement in the offseason, but a lot of it is predicated if we get our inside going. We got (Andrea) Plouffe pounding it in there early, trying to get some points. And they double- and triple-teamed and when they do that, the outside is going to open up and make it a little easier and give these guys more time on the outside. So it's a little of both."

On change in starting lineup: "(Breanne) Watson and (Jill) Bell have both been coming on, coming out of their injuries and illness - Bre with that Mono at the beginning of the year. I thought Bre did a great job of coming out and starting tough. It's a nice luxury to have to be able to mix Kristin (O'Neill) into several different positions. What we'd like to do, now that we're getting steady play from Watson and Bell, is to keep Kristin at the guard position and I thought she did a great job for us tonight."

On Kristin O'Neill: "Kristin is a phenomenal leader, a great kid, and she will do anything for this team and this program. We've had her bombarded playing the 1, 2, 3 and 4 and it's nice that we're getting the help from Watson and Bell so that she can concentrate on what I think is her natural position and that's playing guard."

Guard Kristen O'Neill
On coming of the bench:
"More than anything I was able to focus, and by playing the guard, I was able to do that. I don't mind coming off the bench--I'll do whatever I can to help the team. It was nice not having to play the floor."

On knowing if she was not going to start: "I was aware. Me and June had a talk about earlier this week, and she informed me of their decision, and I supported it. I haven't been producing, and Breanne was back, and so I was happy to go back to the guard spot."

On the play of game: "I thought we played hard. I am really proud of all the girls. We came out with a lot of fire and intensity, and we tried to maintain that throughout the game. They are a very physical team, and I thought we responded well to them."

On playing the whole floor: "I think what it came down to, I was being very tentative on offense. But more than anything I was thinking too much on the court. I had so many positions to play, and I was trying so hard to be perfect in all of them, and execute all of them. I was trying to set that screen there, and pop out there, so it was taking me out of that killer mentality, and attack the basket and just play. So I think I was kind of my worst enemy in that regard."

On the 6-2 start: "I am excited. I think we have gotten off to a very good start. I we would much like to go back, and replay those games in Texas, but I think we learned a lot from them, which is going to help us in the long run."

Guard Emily Florence
On the play of game:
"We just tried to pressure them, and getting in their heads a little bit, and that was what we were trying to do. And we just wanted to get more physical, and I thought we responded very well too. We stayed focus and we relaxed out there, and came out with the win."

On the 6-2 start: "It is great. We came out 5-0, undefeated. It was awesome and a great feeling, and I think we are a totally different team--we are more experienced, and comfortable with each other, and I think we are really happy where we are right now."
