The 2010-'11 ESPN/USA Today coaches' poll came out for the first time this year on Thursday and the Huskies were ranked 17th in the initial poll.
Lorenzo Romar returns four starters and four other letterwinners from a 2009-10 squad that went 26-10, won the Pac-10 Conference Tournament and advanced all the way to the NCAA Sweet 16.
All-Pac-10 performer Isaiah Thomas and his 16.9 points per game return, along with All-Pac-10 defenders Justin Holiday and Venoy Overton. Matthew Bryan-Amaning, Abdul Gaddy, Darnell Gant and Scott Suggs also return for Romar.
Defending champion Duke begins the men's college basketball season ranked No. 1. The Blue Devils received 29 of 31 first-place votes in the poll. No. 2 Michigan State received the other two first-place votes.
Kansas State is third, followed by Pittsburgh and Ohio State to round out the top five.
No. 6 is Villanova, followed by Kansas, Purdue, North Carolina and No. 10 Kentucky.
Florida is ranked 11th, followed by Gonzaga, Syracuse, Baylor, Missouri, Illinois, Washington, Butler, Memphis and No. 20 Tennessee.
No. 21 is Georgetown, while Temple, Virginia Tech, Wisconsin and Texas round out the poll.
