CORVALLIS, Ore. - For the second straight day, the Washington baseball team spotted Oregon State an early lead and then fell just short in its comeback attempts. Saturday, it resulted in a 7-3 win for the Beavers in the second game of a three-game Pac-10 series.
OSU (26-18 overall, 9-11 in the Pac-10) won its fifth straight Pac-10 game after mounting a 7-0 lead through four innings and then hanging on for the victory.
Washington (25-24 overall, 8-12 in the Pac-10) got four and two-thirds innings of shutout relief from junior lefty Ben Guidos and had the tying run at the plate in the seventh and ninth innings, but couldn't get back to even.
UW starter Andrew Kittredge (6-5) suffered the loss, allowing seven runs on eight hits over three and one third. OSU starter Tanner Robles (5-4) picked up the victory, limiting the Huskies to one run on five hits over five and one-third innings.
In the second, Oregon State got two runners into scoring position after two singles and a bunt. After a pop to shallow right field looked to have given the Huskies an escape route, Beavers second baseman Tyler Smith doubled to deep left-center, driving in two to give OSU an early 2-0 lead.
The Beavs added to their lead in the third when left fielder Rob Folsom hit a two-out, two-run homer to left, making it a 4-0 advantage. In the fourth, another extra-base hit brought in two more for OSU as Adalberto Santos' double extended the lead. Dylan Jones followed with a double of his own to plate Santos, making it 7-0.
Washington used a pair of doubles in the fifth to score its first run of the game. Pierce Rankin got it started with a two-out double that dropped in down the right-field line and scored on a two-bagger from Caleb Brown.
In the seventh, the Huskies scored a second run on a single from Rankin. The UW went on to load the bases with one out and a third came in on a fielder's choice grounder from Troy Scott, cutting the gap to 7-3. After a walk re-loaded the bases, Jacob Lamb came to the plate representing the tying run, but OSU reliever Matt Boyd got him swinging to end the inning.
In the ninth, Rankin was hit by a pitch to open the inning and, after a diving catch for the first out, Troy Scott doubled and Miles Kizer walked to lead the bases and bring the tying run to the plate once more, but Tyler Waldon came on for OSU and struck out the final two Husky hitters to end the game.
The Huskies bettered the Beavers' hit total, 11 to 10, but left 15 runners on base to OSU's nine. Rankin, Brown and David Bentrott each had two hits for the UW while Doug Cherry knocked his fourth double in the last three games.
The Huskies and Beavers wrap up the series Sunday with a 1:00 p.m. game, which will air live on KKNW AM-1150 radio.
