BRANDEBURG, Germany-- A Washington rower won gold and two Husky-laden boats qualified for the A/B semifinals at the U-23 World Championships being held in Brandenburg, Germany.

Katelin Snyder coxed the women's eight to a first-place finish in the exhibition race, crossing the line in 6:35.98. The U.S. eight won their race by over three seconds, defeating Poland, Germany, Belarus, Canada and Russia. This is the second U-23 gold for Snyder, who previously coxed the women's eight to gold in 2006 and bronze in 2007.

The Canadian men's eight that won the Grand Challenge Cup at the Henley Royal Regatta in June picked up where they left off and took second in their heat Thursday. Huskies Rob Gibson, Will Crothers, Anthony Jacob, Stephen Connolly, Colin McCabe and Chris Avlard pulled a 5:56.69 in heat one, just three seconds behind the United States team. The Canadians were half a second ahead to lead off, but slipped to second in the second 500m and could not regain the lead.

Blaise Didier rowed for the U.S. men's eight that won the heat, helping the team to a 5:53.44 finish.

Both crews will race again in the A/B semifinal scheduled for July 19. In the men's four event, Nenad Bulicic competed for Serbia, finishing fifth in 6:33.70. Bulicic and the Serbian team were in fourth after 1000m, but slipped behind Germany, who made a late push to finish third.

On the women's side, Erika Shaw raced with the Canadian eight which finished fifth in 6:42.88.

In the women's coxless pair, Samantha Smith and her partner finished third in heat one, completing the race in 7:58.10, three seconds ahead of the Ukrainian team. Smith then rowed the repechage, improving the boat's time by almost five seconds. Her crew crossed the line in 7:53.68, in sixth-place. Smith will row again in the B final against Great Britain on July 19.
