SALT LAKE CITY - The Washington baseball team used a four-run third inning then held off a late rally to beat Utah, 7-6, Sunday at Spring Mobile Ballpark, wrapping up a Pac-12 series victory over the Utes.

Utah entered the bottom of the ninth trailing 7-4. After loading the bases with a hit batter, a walk and a single, shortstop James Brooks knocked a two-out single to left to drive in two runs and draw the Utes within a run. However, closer Joshua Fredendall, who had come on to begin the eighth, struck out Tyler Relf to end the game and earn his seventh save of the year.

Reliever Austin Voth improved to 7-1 with the victory. Voth went two and two-thirds innings, allowing one run on one hit while striking out four. Starter Jeff Brigham pitched the first three frames, allowing two runs on four hits.

The Huskies, who won on Friday, but lost on Saturday against Utah, got two hits each from Robert Pehl, Ty Afenir and Joe Meggs, plus a pair of RBI from Chase Anselment.

Utes starter Mitch Watrous (2-3) was tagged with the loss despite allowing just one earned run. In his five innings, he gave up five hits and five runs total while walking two and fanning two.

The Huskies (23-18 overall, 8-10 in the Pac-12) took advantage of an error to score four runs in the third inning. After singles from Pehl and Afenir put runners at the corners with one out, a grounder to second from Jayce Ray was mishandled for an error, allowing Pehl to score. Joe Meggs followed with a sacrifice fly to left field to bring home Afenir from third, giving the UW a 2-0 lead.

With two outs, the Huskies loaded the bases as Jacob Lamb walked and Branden Berry was hit by a pitch. Anselment followed with a single to right, driving in two more runs to make it 4-0.

The Utes (12-30 overall, 6-15 Pac-12) cut that lead in half in the bottom of the third when Cory Hunt led off with a double and eventually scored from third on a Relf groundout. With two down, Parker Morin walked, took second on a wild pitch and scored on a Shaun Cooper single.

In the fifth, Meggs led off with a triple to left-center and scored on a sacrifice fly from Lamb, increasing the Husky lead to 5-2.

Utah drew closer again in the sixth as a two-out single from Trey Nielsen drove in Relf and Nielsen scored on a single from Gavin Green to cut the Husky lead to just one run at 5-4.

Washington added some needed insurance in the eighth. An errant throw on a double steal allowed Trevor Mitsui to score and a sacrifice fly from Santy (who finished the day with three sacrifice hits and a sac fly in four plate appearances) drove in Erik Forgione to stretch the gap to 7-4.

Washington next heads to Los Angeles for a three-game series next Friday through Sunday at USC.
