TEMPE, Ariz. -- Jennifer Yang shot 5-under 67 on Friday in the first round of the PING/ASU Invitational to earn a share of the lead, but the Huskies are tied for 12th in the 17 team field after combining to shoot 4-over 292.

T12 Washington 292 292
T1 Jennifer Yang (2) 67 67
T41 SooBin Kim (1) 74 74
T48 Charlotte Thomas (3) 75 75
T61 Ying Luo (4) 76 76
T89 Cyd Okino (5) DQ DQ

Yang started with birdies on No.'s 2 and 3 on the front nine of ASU's Karsten Course and added three more on the back to complete her bogey-free round. She is tied atop the leaderboard with Duke's Laetitia Beck. The pair has a one-stroke lead over five other golfers.

"I'm really happy for Jen Yang," Husky Coach Mary Lou Mulflur said. "She just played solid all day obviously. It's good to see her have it all come together."

Yang was the only Husky that could get anything going consistently all day. Three of her teammates combined to shoot 9-over and a fourth was disqualified for the round.

The ninth-ranked Huskies are tied at 12th with TCU, but are by no means out of contention.

UCLA shot 9-under 279 to lead a total of eight teams that are even par or better. Duke is one stroke back of the Bruins at 8-under, followed by USC (-5), Alabama (-2) and Texas (-2) to round out the top-five scoring teams.

After Yang, the next highest Husky on the leaderboard is SooBin Kim, who is tied for 41st. Kim, the No. 5 player in's rating system, shot 2-over 74. She had two birdies during her round, but also four bogeys - including one on the par-4 18th hole.

In fact, Yang was the only Husky of those that had counting scores that did not score bogey or worse on the final hole.

Freshman Charlotte Thomas was poised to have a nice finish that included birdies on No.'s 15 and 16, but a double-bogey 6 on the final hole cost her. She ended up shooting 75 and is tied for 48th.

Fellow freshman Ying Luo shot 76 and is tied for 61st. Luo went without any birdies and had four bogeys during her round.

Sophomore Cyd Okino was disqualified after signing an incorrect scorecard. She signed for a five on the final hole, when she actually had a six. Her score was not going to count towards the team total anyways.

Despite struggling on Friday, Mulflur feels her team will come back strong on Saturday.

"Obviously we struggled a little bit," she said. "But they feel good and they're comfortable. It wasn't our best day.

"We can just keep moving forward and we feel like we can have a couple of good rounds and we'll be in good shape."

The Huskies have two more days and 36 holes left to make up some ground on the field. Washington will be paired with Colorado and UNLV and tee off from the 10th tee starting at 8:40 a.m. on Saturday.
