Thousand Oaks, Calif. - Sterling Clark's career best first-round 67 propelled the 26th-ranked Washington men's golf team to second place after a cold and wet opening round at the Ashworth Invitational in Thousand Oaks, Calif. The Huskies shot an even-par 284 to trail Pepperdine by one stroke at North Ranch Country Club. Play was suspended in the second round due to heavy rain while the Huskies were still out on the course.

Clark's 4-under 67 led all golfers in the opening round, affording him a 1-stroke lead over Oklahoma's Anthony Kim, Coastal Carolina's Zack Byrd and Adam Porzak of Pepperdine. The sophomore's previous career best 18-hole score was a 71 he shot at the 2005 Pac-10 Championships.

"Sterling had a great day," said Husky head coach Matt Thurmond. "I walked with him the whole day, and it was a lot of fun. If he can play like that all the time, we'll be a tough team to deal with."

Senior James Lepp shot an even-par 71 to place 11th in round one. One stroke behind him was junior Alex Prugh, whose 1-over 72 was good for 15th in the field. Erik Olson's 74 and Zach Bixler's 76 rounded out the Huskies' first round scoring, placing them 29th and 53rd, respectively.

"The effort was awesome today," Thurmond said. "We aren't that sharp right now - we're still making a lot of mistakes - and the playing conditions were extremely difficult, but we fought really hard and were able to work through some things. We're excited to go out there tomorrow and have a chance to win."

The second round will be concluded tomorrow beginning at 7 a.m. and will be immediately followed by the third and final round. Live scoring of the tournament is available at First round results only are listed below.
