Lucerne, Switzerland - Five current members of the Washington rowing team will be competing when racing at the 2001 FISA World Rowing Championships gets underway Sunday in Lucerne, Switzerland. Heidi Hurn (Redmond, Wash.), Anna Mickelson (Bellevue, Wash.), coxswain Mary Whipple (Sacramento, Calif.), John Lorton (Seattle, Wash.) and Lucas Ahlstrand (Oakland, Calif.) will represent the United States in the week-long world regatta as more than 900 rowers from 49 countries compete in 24 events at the regatta, which runs August 19-26.

Hurn, Mickelson and Whipple, all a part of the from the 2001 NCAA championship women's crew, were named to the US women's eight-oared crew. Lorton will row in the three seat of the men's quadruple sculls while Ahlstrand is a part of the men's lightweight eight and will row in the bow seat. Both men were a part of the Husky varsity that won a bronze medal at the collegiate national championships last June.

All five Huskies are first-time Senior National Team members. Whipple, Ahlstrand and Lorton all have experience as US Junior National Team competitors while Mickelson has senior B squad and 2000 Nation's Cup experience.

The United States will have 79 athletes competing in 23 of the 24 events. On Sunday, 11 U.S. crews will begin their quests for world titles in preliminary heats, among them Ahlstrand in the lightweight eight.

On Monday, 11 more U.S. crews will race in preliminary heats, including the men's quadruple sculls, women's eight and men's eight.

Last year, the U.S. won seven total medals in the 24 events, three at the Olympics in Sydney, Australia, and four at the non-Olympic world championships where the non-Olympic events are contested. In 1999, the U.S. won 10 total medals.

Following the first two days of heats, repechages, or second-chance races, will take place on Tuesday and Wednesday. Semifinals for events with enough entries will be held August 23-24, with the finals taking place Aug. 25-26.
