Seattle, Wash. - Washington's rowing will compete this Saturday in the annual Husky Open on March 31. The first race on the 14-event schedule starts at 7:10 a.m. on the 2,000-meter Montlake Cut course that runs along the southern edge of the UW campus. The final race is slated for 10:10 a.m. Washington will face collegiate competition from cross-state rival Washington State and Western Washington. The three collegiate crews will be joined by five club competitors: Everett Rowing Association, Green Lake Crew, Lakeside Rowing, Mount Baker Crew and Pocock Rowing Center.

Washington crews displayed their depth last year, as the Huskies won all eight collegiate races on April 1, 2006 at the Husky Invitational on the Montlake Cut. The top UW crews took the day off following last weekend's season-opening Windermere Classic. The rest of the Husky fleet was fast, including four events in which Washington crews placed one-two. The Husky men clocked a winning time of 6:19.3 in their varsity eight race. UW's second entry was second in 6:33.8 and the Cougars placed third in 7:17.9. Washington also registered one-two finishes in the men's varsity four and novice four races along with the women's novice eight. The Huskies won the women's featured race, the varsity eight. UW's first boat finished in 6-minutes, 58.1-seconds followed by Washington State in 7:08.7. The Huskies' second entry placed third in 7:15.8. Husky crews were also victorious in the women's varsity and novice fours and the men's novice eight.

The Montlake Course
The starting line for the Huskies' home regattas is on Lake Washington, parallel to the Evergreen Point floating bridge. The course runs from east to west through the Montlake Cut to the finish line near the mouth of Portage Bay at the west end of Montlake Cut. A good view of the race course is available along either side of Montlake Cut, or from the Montlake Bridge.
