SEATTLE - The University of Washington's home baseball game against Oregon State on Fri., May 4, will be played at Safeco Field, home of the Seattle Mariners, the UW athletics department and the Mariners announced today. The game will air live on FSN.
"We're really excited to play at Safeco Field, which I feel is the finest venue in all of major league sports," Husky head coach Ken Knutson said. "This will be a big boost for our program and we're grateful to the Mariners for the opportunity."
"The Mariners enthusiastically welcome the Huskies and Pac-10 baseball to Safeco Field. Making the ballpark available for this game is exactly the type of community use that was envisioned from the ballpark's beginning," said Chuck Armstrong, Seattle Mariners President and COO.
"It will be a great thrill for the student-athletes from Washington and Oregon State to play at Safeco, one of the jewels of Major League Baseball," said Todd Turner, UW athletics director. "We appreciate the partnership of the Mariners organization in making this happen."
First pitch for the Huskies' first-ever game at Safeco Field is set for 7:30 p.m. The game will air live on FSN in the Northwest, following the telecast of the Mariners' game vs. New York that evening from Yankee Stadium. KKNW AM-1150 will carry the radio broadcast of the game.
Tickets went on sale this morning at the Husky Ticket Office and will go on sale March 3 at the Mariners box office at Safeco Field. The Mariners box office is open from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. every day and the Husky Ticket Office is open from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. each weekday. Parking in the Safeco Field garage, located off of Edgar Martinez Way on the south side of the stadium, will be available for only $5 as long as space is available. The stadium gates at the home plate entrance to Safeco Field will open at 6:30 p.m., one hour before game time.
As with all Husky weekend home games, kids 12 and under will have the opportunity to join the Huskies on the field during the national anthem and will also be allowed to take a lap around the bases following the game.
"We're hoping for a very large crowd," Knutson said. "This game should be a great showcase for college baseball in the Northwest."
Washington last played on a Major League field in 1997, when the Huskies played in a tournament hosted by the University of Minnesota in the Metrodome in Minneapolis. The Huskies also used to host an annual tournament in the Kingdome from 1990 to 1996 and played the Mariners in an exhibition game there in 1986.
The UW-OSU game on May 4 is the first game of a three-game, Pac-10 Conference series. Saturday and Sunday's game will take place at Husky Ballpark on the Washington campus at 2:00 p.m. Sat., May 5, and 1:00 p.m. on Sun., May 6. The Huskies open the 2007 season Fri., Feb. 16 vs. Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo, Calif.
