Box Score

PORTLAND, Ore. - Miles Kizer's two-out solo homer in the seventh broke a 5-5 tie as the Washington baseball team edged Portland, 6-5, Wednesday afternoon at Joe Etzel Field.

Washington (18-13) led 5-2 before a three-run homer from Pilots DH Beau Fraser in the sixth. However, Kizer, a junior catcher from Phoenix, Ariz., came up with two down the following inning and provided what proved the winning run.

Husky second baseman Doug Cherry went 4-for-5 while reliever Adam Cimber (3-2) picked up the victory with one and two-thirds innings of work. Jacob Clem threw two hitless innings, striking out four, to record his third save of the year.

Reliever Chris Johnson (1-1) suffered the loss for the Pilots, who dropped to 20-9.

Washington opened the scoring with a run in the third inning. After Troy Scott reached on an error to lead off, a bunt and groundout moved him to third. He scored on a Cherry single.

However, Portland came back with two in the bottom of the third to take a 2-1 lead. Kevin Armijo doubled and scored on a triple from Austin Pearce, who scored on a double from Kris Kauppila.

Washington came back with four in the fourth. After Pierce Rankin doubled and scored on an error, Aaron Russell came in to score when the throw to third to try and get him stealing sailed into left field. After a walk to Miles Kizer, Husky first baseman Troy Scott hit his third homer of the year to make it a 5-2 Husky lead.

Portland drew even in the sixth when Fraser belted a three-run homer to left-center, tying the game at 5-5.

The Huskies travel to Berkeley for a three-game series at California this weekend. All three games from Cal will air live on KKNW AM-1150.
