Walnut Creek, Calif. - Four days after being recognized as national coach of the year, Washington women's crew coach Jan Harville was named Pacific-10 Conference Rowing Coach of the Year, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced. It is the third consecutive year and ninth time overall that Harville has earned the Conference award.

Harville, who led the Huskies to a pair of titles at the NCAA Championships, was named 2002 Division I National Coach of the Year by the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) June 24.

Harville led the Huskies' to a second-place finish at the NCAA Women's Rowing Championships earlier this spring. Washington's 63 team points were just four fewer than first-place Brown (67 points). In the process, she coached the first varsity eight to its second consecutive national championship and the junior varsity to its first national title since 1994. The pair of national titles marked the first time UW won both the varsity eight and junior varsity eight events at the same national championships since 1987.

In her 15th season as the head coach at Washington, Harville coached the Huskies' first varsity eight and second varsity eight to undefeated seasons in 2002. Her crews earned victories at the San Diego Crew Classic, the Windermere Cup, the Pac-10 Conference Championships and the NCAA Championships, along with dual race victories over Wisconsin, Washington State and Oregon State.

Harville, who was named the Seattle Post-Intelligencer Women's Sports Star of Year last year, directs a group of student-athletes who continue to reap awards both on and off the water. Four women from the undefeated varsity eight were named to the All-Pacific-10 Conference First Team and three women are on the national ballot to earn all-America honors. Two were named CRCA Academic All-Americans and five were honored on the All-Pac-10 Academic Team.

She was also named Pac-10 Coach of the Year in 1988, '92, '93, '94, '97, '98, '00, and '01. California's Steve Gladstone was named 2002 Men's Pac-10 Coach of the Year for the fifth year in a row.
