BRANDENBURG, Germany--Eleven Washington rowers will compete this week in the Under-23 World Championships held in Brandenburg, Germany July 17-20.

Roughly 600 athletes from 40 countries will row at the U-23 Championships, which began as the Seniors Match, held in Macon, France in 1976.

The 11 current and former Washington student-athletes competing at the regatta will represent the United States, Canada and Serbia.

On the men's side, rising junior All-Pac-10 selection Blaise Didier will be the lone Husky rower for the U.S. team's 8+ boat.

The five Huskies who won the Grand Challenge Cup at Henley Royal Regatta for Canada will reprise their roles this week in Germany. Current Huskies Rob Gibson, All-Pac-10 pick William Crothers, Anthony Jacob and Stephen Connolly will compete for Canada in the Men's 8+ event, along with incoming freshman Colin McCabe and UW alum Chris Avlard.

Rising sophomore Nenad Bulicic will represent Serbia in the Men's 4+.

For the women, Katelin Snyder will cox the women's 8+ for the United States. Snyder, who coxed the men's eight to a national title in 2007, is making her third appearance at the U-23 Championships, having previously led the U.S. women to a bronze last year and a gold in 2006.

Rising senior Samantha Smith, who helped the Huskies to a third-place finish in the second varsity eight at NCAAs, will row in the Canadian coxless pair and rising junior Erika Shaw, who sat in the bow seat of the varsity eight at NCAAs, will compete in Canada's 8+. Smith will be making her second U-23 appearance, after training with Canada in 2007.

Men's crew head coach Michael Callahan will also be in Brandenburg, coaching the U.S. men's 8+ crew.
