SEATTLE-- The Huskies will experience the feeling of the home track advantage for the first and only time this season as they play host to the Washington Outdoor Preview, Saturday, to open their 2001 outdoor track campaign.

The UW squads finished the team section of the indoor season last weekend with third (men) and sixth place (women) finishes at the Mountain Pacific Indoor Championships in Flagstaff, Ariz., and are geared up to begin the outdoor effort.

Returning to the lineup for the Husky women will be senior All-American distance runner Anna Aoki, who will take on her final season of outdoor eligibility, along with several other UW women who have battled injuries for the majority of the indoor campaign.

The Washington men will look to continue their indoor success with bang up performances across the board to open the outdoor season.

The men will be without the services of NCAA qualifiers David Bazzi, Ja'Warren Hooker and Brad Walker, who will all attend other meets over the weekend to seek to improve their qualifying marks. Bazzi will travel to Ames, Iowa, for the Iowa State Last Chance Qualifier, while Hooker and Walker will journey to Idaho for a last chance meet.

Results for the Washington Outdoor Preview will available on the Washington website at www.gohuskies.com.

Admission to the meet is free, but patrons should arrive early to avoid paying for parking as there is a women's basketball that afternoon.

A meet schedule is listed below. The men's and women's hammer throw events will be held Friday beginning at 1:30 p.m.

"Hook"ing It Up

Senior Ja'Warren Hooker (Ellensburg, Wash.) bettered both of his automatic qualifying marks, despite the altitude, en route to winning the 60- and 200-meter dash events at the Mountain Pacific Indoor Championships. He improved his 60-meter mark to an altitude adjusted 6.55 seconds and dropped his 200-meter time to an altitude adjusted 20.75 seconds. He is currently ranked second in the 60m and third in the 200m on the NCAA best lists.

"Walk"ing to Higher Ground

Sophomore Brad Walker (Spokane, Wash.) topped his provisional qualifying mark in the pole vault by more than four inches, while earning top honors at the Mountain Pacific Indoor Championships. Walker boosted his career and season-best height from 17-4 1/2 to 17-9, Saturday. In the event that not enough individuals reach the automatic qualifying standard, provisional qualifiers will be added in order of performance to ensure a full field.

Going the Distance

Senior David Bazzi, the Washington record holder in the 5,000m, earned a provisional qualifying mark in the 3,000-meter event at the McDonald's Scoring Invitational last weekend. Bazzi is no stranger to the NCAA Championships, as he placed 12th in the 5,000m at the 2000 Outdoor championships. His time of 8:07.05 ranks 22nd on the current NCAA best list. In the event that not enough individuals reach the automatic qualifying standard, provisional qualifiers will be added in order of performance to ensure a full field.
