SEATTLE - The Washington baseball belted five solo home runs, including two from second baseman Doug Cherry, to power its way to a 12-4 win over Gonzaga Wednesday at Husky Ballpark.

Cherry, a senior from Inglemoor High School, hit his first two homers of the season and finished the day 4-for-5, one day after having gone 4-for-4 against the Bulldogs. Caleb Brown, Pierce Rankin and Troy Scott also hit long balls for the Huskies, who improved to 21-19 on the season.

UW reliever Jacob Clem improved to 3-3 with the victory. He entered the game in the fifth with the score tied a 4-4 and worked three and two-thirds no-hit innings. GU reliever Andrew Danner (1-5) pitched one inning for the loss.

In the first inning, Washington took a 1-0 lead as Brown connected on a two-out solo homer, his third of the year. Brown finished the day 3-for-5.

In the second, Cherry led off with his first homer of the season, lining a pitch over the left-field fence, to make it 2-0.

Gonzaga (14-28-1), held hitless through the first three innings, rallied to tie the score in the fourth. After a single from Mark Castellitto and a double from Andy Hunter, a balk allowed one to score. Clayton Eslick followed with a double to drive in Hunter, tying the score at 2-2.

Cherry answered in the bottom of the fourth, leading off with his second homer of the game. Washington went on to load the bases with one out and Bradley Boyer fell just a few feet shy of a grand slam, but scored a runner from third with a sacrifice fly to make it a 4-2 Husky lead.

However, Gonzaga was quick to reply with two runs in the fifth, tying the score once more at 4-4. After a walk and a double, a sacrifice fly scored one and Tyler Chism followed with an RBI single to tie it up.

Cherry, however, started a two-out rally with a single, his seventh straight base hit. After a walk to Scott, catcher Miles Kizer belted a double into the left-field corner, scoring Cherry. Jacob Lamb and David Bentrott followed with singles, driving in a run with each, to put the UW back in front, 7-4.

In the sixth, Rankin hit a long, solo homer to left to up the lead to 8-4. It was the sixth of the year for Rankin.

In the seventh, Scott led off with his fifth round-tripper of the year, a long shot to right-center. Later in the inning, a double from Boyer and a single from Brown drove in another pair of runs. An RBI single from Boyer, who was 2-for-5 with three runs batted in, in the eighth wrapped up the UW scoring.

This weekend, the UW plays host to No. 21 Stanford. Friday's game at Husky Ballpark starts at 6:00 p.m. Saturday, the game will be played at Safeco Field, starting at 6:30 p.m. Sunday's game has been moved up to a 12:00 p.m. start.
