RIVERSIDE, Calif. - After surrendering the lead in the seventh, the Washington baseball team rallied for three runs in the eighth and tacked on another in the ninth to beat UC Riverside, 8-5, Friday at the Riverside Sports Complex. The Huskies improved to 3-1 with the win while the Highlanders fell to 4-11.
The two teams also revised the weekend's schedule, which called for single games Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Instead, due to the probability of rain on Sunday, the teams will play a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday. If the rain doesn't come on Sunday, that game (also a 1:00 p.m. start) will still be played as well -- making it a four-game series.
In Friday's game, neither team was able to get much going offensively until the fourth. With two outs and runners at first and third, Husky right fielder Tyler Davidson doubled to send home Jay Garthwaite with the opening tally. Third baseman Michael Done followed with a two-run single to make it 3-0.
The Highlanders posted their first run in the fourth when Randy Blood walked and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly by Adam Spiker. The Huskies tacked on a run in the seventh when Mike Wagner walked and then rounded the bases on three wild pitches by UCR starter George Carralejo (1-4).
UCR rallied in the bottom of the seventh to take the lead. A sacrifice fly by Rich Hofman scored one run and a bloop single from Tim Faulkner sent in another. Blood then sent a sharp single to center that drove in two runs to give the Highlanders a 5-4 lead.
In the eighth, Done's double to center field drove in Garthwaite and Jefferson Thiel as the Huskies took back the lead. An RBI single from Mike Wagner sent home Davidson with another to make it 7-5. In the ninth, Bryan Johnson doubled and scored on a double from Thiel to close out the scoring.
Husky junior Shawn Kohn (1-0) earned the victory in relief of Tyler Shepple, who gave up four runs on four hits over 6.2 innings. Sophomore Scott Robertson pitched a perfect ninth inning for his second save of the season. UCR reliever David Gibson (0-1) suffered the loss.
Done, a junior, led the Husky hitters, finishing 2-for-4 with four runs batted in.
