MOSCOW - The Husky alumni crew finished third in the Moscow International Regatta on Sept. 6, defeating both Cambridge and Oxford. Italy's University of Pavia won the race and the Russian crew took second.
Washington drew the outside lane for the race, lining up in lane five, next to Cambridge in lane four. The Italian crew got off to a fast start and the Huskies fell about two lengths behind. The UW eight rowed well, but was unable to make up the distance, earning bronze and ending its undefeated streak in Russia. The Husky alumni pulled across the finish line at 10:08.00. The Italian crew finished in 9:56.09, while the University of Physical Education - Moscow crossed the line in 10:01.15.
Cambridge finished in 10:14.76 for fourth, followed by HEC University of France in fifth at 12:02.66.
John Sayre and Chuck Alm, both members of the legendary 1958 crew that defeated the Soviets in the U.S.S.R., were on the trip to commemorate the 50th anniversary of that historic win. A special ceremony was held after the race to honor the U.S. and Russian oarsmen from that race, with all members present receiving special commemorative medals.
