BOSTON, Mass - The Washington crew was the top NCAA finisher, placing fourth overall Sunday in the women's championship four race at the 38th-annual Head of the Charles Regatta.
The Huskies started in the 23rd position among the 33-boat field. They clocked a time of 19-minutes, 3-seconds, just one second behind the third-place time of 19:02 posted by a the German crew Frankfurter Rudergesellschaft Germania 1869.
The winning women's four, a group of Canadian National rowers competing for the London Training Center, recorded a time of 18:24 followed by the University of Victoria's second-place mark of 18:58.
Washington was the top finisher among the 18 entries from American colleges. The Huskies' time was 16 seconds faster than their East Coast rival Brown University which finished fifth overall in 19:19. Yale was sixth (19:21) followed by UCLA (19:22), Virginia (19:32), Princeton (19:35) and Michigan (19:35).
A group of five seniors represented Washington, including rowers Lauren Estevenin, Heidi Hurn, Adrienne Hunter and Carrie Stasiak who constituted half of the Huskies' varsity eight championship crew at the 2002 NCAA Championships. Coxswain Anne Hessburg was a member of UW's junior varsity eight that also won an NCAA title in 2002.
The four-oared event was a reunion of sorts for those Huskies who have each been competing in eights the last two collegiate seasons. The group participating in Boston this weekend was the same unit that raced to the 2000 NCAA championship in the varsity four event.
First held in October of 1965, the Head of the Charles Regatta is the world's largest two-day rowing event. The race was established by the Cambridge Boat Club members to replicate the traditional "head of the river" races in England.
The river race was a drastic break from the straight, 2,000-meter courses the Huskies are accustomed to. Rather than racing side-by-side, teams start in a single-file line and must navigate around opposing crews in order to pass them.
The venue was a three-mile course along the Charles River in Boston, Mass. Teams raced against each other and the clock, starting sequentially approximately 15 seconds apart.
Washington was in third place after the first split, a time of 4:28 that was seven seconds off the pace of the eventual winner from the London Training Center. The Huskies moved into second place by the second split with a time of 10:31. They dropped to fourth place with a time of 15:55 at the third split.
Despite registering the second-best time over the final quarter, UW remained in fourth place at the finish.
