INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Nine former University of Washington rowers were named to the 85-athlete United States' National Team roster for the 2006 World Championships that was released Monday by USRowing.

The U.S. will have 26 crews competing at the FISA World Championships, Aug. 20-27 in Eton, England. Six of those crews will be powered by Huskies, including the men's eight that features Giuseppe Lanzone (Annandale, Va.) and Matt Deakin (San Francisco, Calif.). Lanzone completed his UW career in 2005 and Deakin in 2002.

The women's eight also has two Huskies in the boat, coxswain Marry Whipple (Sacramento, Calif.) and Anna Mickelson (Bellevue, Wash./Newport). Those two helped the U.S. eight capture the silver medal at the 2004 Olympics. Whipple and Mickelson capped their collegiate careers in 2002 by leading UW to the varsity eight national championship.

Mickelson will be busy at the championships as she is also scheduled to row in the women's pair alongside Megan Cooke. Those two were first-place finishers in the pair at the World Cup stop in Lucerne, Switzerland during July. Mickelson finished fifth in the quadruple sculls at the 2005 world regatta in Gifu, Japan.

The men's pair features former Husky Sam Burns (Seattle, Wash./O'Dea) who graduated in 2004, while the men's four without coxswain includes Brett Newlin whose last UW season was 2005.

The men's four with coxswain has a trio of former Huskies in Kyle Larson (Mount Vernon, Wash./Mount Venon), Scott Gault (Piedmont, Calif.) and Brodie Buckland (Olympia, Wash./Capital). Larson and Gault completed their Husky careers in 2005 while Buckland last rowed at UW in 2004.
