INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Four members of Washington's national champion freshman eight crew, along with Coach Michael Callahan, will compete at the upcoming 2006 World Rowing Under-23 Championships.

Nine crews will represent the United States at the Championships scheduled to run July 20-23 in Hazewinkel, Belgium. The U.S. will have crews competing in the men's single sculls, lightweight women's single sculls, women's pair, men's quadruple sculls, lightweight men's quadruple sculls, lightweight men's four, men's four with coxswain, women's eight, and men's eight.

Callahan, who guided the Husky freshmen to the 2006 IRA title, will coach the U.S. men's eights and fours. One member of the Huskies' gold-medal crew will row in the American eight-oared entry, sophomore Jessiah Johnson, a product of Mercer Island (Wash.) High School.

Another member of UW's championship freshman crew will represent the U.S. at the world championships. Coxswain Katelin Snyder (Winter Park, Fla.) will direct the women's eight in Belgium.

The Canadian National Team features six Huskies, including four members of the men's eight. Will Crothers (Kingston, Ontario) and Max Lang (Lumby, B.C.) rowed in the Huskies championship freshman boat. Also on the crew are Chris Aylard and junior Rob Gibson (Kingston, Ontario), who was a member of the UW varsity eight that finished fifth at the IRA championships.

The Canadian women are represented by Huskies Cara Troelstra and Kara Farquharson. Troelstra (Halifax, Nova Scotia) will row in the women's eight while Farquharson (Mississauga, Ontario) competes in the single sculls.

The Under 23 event has been in existence for nearly 30 years. Held for the first time in 1976 in Macon, France, under the title "Seniors Match" it eventually became the "Nations Cup" in 1992. FISA's 2005 Extraordinary Congress in Dubrovnik, Croatia, voted to upgrade the World Rowing Under 23 Regatta to the World Rowing Championships status.

Under 23 rowers raced under the FISA flag for the first time in 2004. With the annual participation of approximately 40 countries and 600 athletes, the world of rowing is looking forward to watching Under 23 rowers in the build up to the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.
