SEATTLE - The Washington baseball team scored six runs in the first and cruised to a 14-4 win over the University of British Columbia Tuesday night at rainy Husky Ballpark.

The game was an exhibition for the Huskies, though it did count for UBC, which competes in the NAIA against all U.S. opposition. The game featured two rain delays.

UW junior Jason Erickson picked up the win in his first outing in seven weeks since breaking his hand in March. In a scheduled three-inning appearance, he allowed just one run on one hit (a solo homer), walking two and striking out two. Ben Guidos threw threw innings and Paul Dickey, Josh Scofield and Brian Pearl each worked an inning in relief as the five combined on a four-hitter.

Thunderbirds starter Scott Webster (1-2) gave up seven earned runs on six hits over two and two-thirds innings to take the loss.

UBC (22-23) grabbed the early lead in the first when right fielder Fletcher Vynne belted a two-out solo homer in the top of the first.

In the bottom of the first, however, the Huskies sent nine men to the plate and scored six runs. Big hits in the inning were an RBI double from Brendan Gardner-Young, a two-run single from Andy Lentz, an RBI double from Pierce Rankin and a run-scoring triple from Jake Rife.

Washington added two more in the second and, in the third, Rankin, the UW's freshman catcher, drilled a leadoff homer to left to make it 9-1 Huskies.

UBC scored on in the fifth on a sacrifice fly, but Washington got two more on a pinch-hit single from Brett Wilcox. The T-Birds got two more in the eighth on a two-run double from Ryan Pilgrim.

Husky third baseman Jarett Jackson hit a three-run homer in the eighth to cap the UW's scoring.

Gardner-Young and Rankin, both freshmen, led the Husky hitters. Gardner-Young went 3-for-5 while Rankin was 2-for-3 with a double, a home run and two RBI.

The Huskies travel to Los Angeles for a three-game series this weekend at USC. Friday (7:00 p.m.) and Saturday (1:30 p.m.), the games will air live on KKNW AM-1150. Sunday, the game will air only on the internet at gohuskies.com.
