Box Score

SEATTLE - Kyle Conley hit a pinch-hit, three-run homer with two outs in the bottom of the ninth to break a scoreless tie as the Washington baseball team shut out Portland, 3-0, Tuesday at Husky Ballpark in a non-conference game.

Geoff Brown, Forrest Snow and Tyler Cheney combined on a three-hit shutout for Washington. Brown, an all-state selection at Jackson High, worked the first eight innings, allowing two hits and two walks while striking out eight. Cheney (1-2) got a double-play groundout from the only batter he faced in the top of the ninth to pick up the win.

The Huskies improved to 21-9 on the season while Portland fell to 16-17. It was the sixth shutout of the season by the UW.

Washington entered the week with the nation's fifth-lowest ERA (3.07) and only improved that number through the early part of the game as Brown allowed no runs and just two singles over the first eight innings. Brown retired the first seven and the last nine batters he faced.

UP starter Brennan Thorpe essentially matched Brown, also holding the UW scoreless on two hits over the first seven and one-third innings. In fact, only an error in the sixth kept Thorpe from retiring 18 in a row.

In the bottom of the ninth, with Ed Wakefield on in place of Thorpe, pinch hitter Doug Cherry walked to lead off. After a sacrifice bunt moved him to second, Owen Jones replaced Wakefield and struck out pinch hitter Joey Dunn. Ty Rasmussen was intentionally walked to put runners at first and second and Scott Burris came on to face Conley, a redshirt sophomore from Richland, who lofted his fifth homer of the year to win it.

The Huskies continue a string of six straight non-conference games this Thursday through Saturday when BYU visits Husky Ballpark. The Thursday and Friday games will both get underway at 6:30 p.m. while Saturday's series finale has been moved up to an 11:00 a.m. starting time.
