SEATTLE -- No. 42 Washington battled against one of the top teams in the country, but fell short to No. 6 USC, 6-1. The Dawgs battled back in doubles, but lost that point and then won one of six singles matches, although several were close.

In doubles, USC stormed out to leads in all three matches. However, Washington battled back and made things interesting with the match at No. 3 tied and Elianne Douglas-Miron and Julija Lukac and Andjela Nemcevic got their match to a tiebreak, but also fell, 8-7 (7-1).

In singles, Washington began with a win as Julija Lukac stormed to a 5-1 lead, before Gabriella DeSimone was forced to retire.

It would end up as the only Husky victory, although Douglas-Miron and Shimizu both took their matches to a third set. Douglas-Miron rebounded from being shutout in the first set to win the second, 6-4, then get the third set to a tiebreak. She battled the No. 27 player in the nation, but eventually fell 7-3 in the third-set breaker.

Shimizu played a pro-set tiebreaker for set three, falling 10-5. She also came back after losing the first set to win the second set, 6-4.

USC has five ranked players, but the Dawgs did not appear overmatched. Nemcevic and Grace Ysidora played top-10 players at No. 1 and No. 2, but held their own. Ysidora led in the second set, before falling 7-5 as her match clinched the win for USC.

It gets no easier for Washington as Saturday they return to action to face No. 4 UCLA. The Bruins have six ranked players and knocked Washington out of the ITA Team Indoor qualifying earlier this season. Saturday's match is a new first serve and will be played in either the Nordstrom Tennis Center or the Bill Quillian Tennis Stadium depending on weather.
