BELMONT, Calif. -- In a major test against one of their biggest rivals, the Washington women's crew team wasn't able to find the speed that had carried it to a No. 2 ranking to start the spring racing season.

Pac-12 counterpart California swept all four races at Redwood Shores on Saturday, including claiming their ninth straight Simpson Cup in the varsity eight race.

In that varsity eight battle, the Huskies finished seven seconds in back of Cal, coming across at 6:29. The Golden Bears, who had made some lineup changes during the week, won the race with a time of 6:22.

It was tight racing all the way down for the Huskies in the second varsity eights, as the Huskies withstood several charges from the Bears only to fall late in the race. Only four seconds separated the boats, 6:27 to 6:31 respectively. The closest race came in the varsity fours, with the Huskies three seconds back of Cal, 7:18 to 7:15. Cal had a strong performance in the novice eight category, with the Golden Bears taking a commanding win with a time of 6:45, compared to 6:58 for the Huskies.

Washington had started the season with a string of positive results, most notably a win in its V8 heat at the San Diego Crew Classic. The Huskies followed it up with a commanding performance against Washington State in the Apple Cup dual. The goal now for women's coach and rowing director Bob Ernst is to return to the Montlake Cut and develop speed in preparation for the Windermere Cup on May 5, which will feature South American power Argentina.

"We're going to try and find some speed," Ernst said. "We need to get 'em going a little better."
