Box Score

SEATTLE - UC Irvine had a combined no-hit bid broken up in the ninth inning, but still handed the Washington baseball team a 6-3 loss Sunday at Husky Ballpark in the final game of a three-game non-conference series.

UCI freshman starter Reid Suitor (3-0) worked five no-hit innings in his second college start. He walked four and hit two batters while striking out three. Chris Lopez worked two-thirds of an inning, Tom Calahan worked one-third and Eric Pettis threw two innings before the UW managed its first hit with no outs in the bottom of the ninth.

All-American closer Blair Erickson, who entered the game with 46 career saves (three short of the NCAA record), walked leadoff hitter Bradley Boyer to open the ninth. Andy Lentz followed by looping a triple down the right-field line, breaking up the no-hitter and driving in the Huskies' second run. Lentz eventually scored on a passed ball to account for the UW's third run.

The Huskies (2-8) had their chances to score as UCI pitchers issued 13 walks and hit three batters, but Washington didn't manage a hit through the first eighth innings, scoring its first run on a bases-loaded walk. Irvine improved to 12-4-1 with the win.

After leaving the bases loaded without scoring in the third, the Anteaters broke through in the fourth when center fielder Matt Morris led off with his fourth homer of the year. After a pair of singles and a sacrifice bunt, Tyler Vaughn's sacrifice fly to center field gave Irvine a 2-0 lead.

In the fifth, UC Irvine added another pair of runs as Morris singled through the middle with runners at second and third, driving in two to increase the Anteaters lead to 4-0.

In the sixth, with Suitor out of the game, Washington mounted its biggest threat of the game as two UCI relievers loaded the bases with two walks and a hit batter, and the Huskies scored their first run before recording a hit as Michael Burgher drew a walk to force in a run. However, reliever Tom Calahan struck out Bradley Boyer to end the inning with the no-hitter in tact.

In the eighth, an RBI single from Taylor Holiday drove in a run and UCI second baseman Cody Cipriano, who hit two homers in game two of Saturday's doubleheader, tacked on a sixth run in the ninth when he led off with a homer to right.

Monday and Tuesday, the Dawgs continue the homestand as Southern Utah comes to Husky Ballpark for a two-game series. Monday's first pitch is slated for 5:00 p.m. and Tuesday, game time is 2:00 p.m. Live stats and video for both games will be available at gohuskies.com.
