SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - Cal Poly right fielder Nick Torres drove in five runs as the Mustangs beat the Washington baseball team, 6-3, in the first game of a three-game series Friday night at Baggett Stadium.
The Huskies (9-4) saw their six-game winning stream come to an end while the Mustangs improved to 10-4.
Washington scored a pair of runs in the first inning, but Torres came through by driving in runs in the first, third, fifth and seventh innings.
Husky starter Aaron West (2-1) struck out seven in his five innings of work, but suffered the loss, giving up four runs (three earned) on seven hits. Poly's Joey Wagman (3-1) went eight innings for the victory, allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits while fanning six. Chase Johnson pitched the ninth for the save.
In the first, the Huskies loaded the bases on two walks and a single. Branden Berry then reached on an infield single down the third-base line to drive in one and Chase Anselment singled through the right side to drive in a second. However, Cal Poly starter Joey Wagman struck out the next two Husky hitters to escape the inning trailing by just two.
Cal Poly got one of those runs back in the bottom of the first. With two outs and none on, Mitch Haniger was hit by a pitch and Nick Torres followed with a double to left to drive him in and break a string of 14 straight shutout innings from West.
The Mustangs went in front when Torres came through again in the third. With two aboard thanks to an error and a bunt single, Torres tripled down the right-field line, giving Cal Poly a 3-2 lead.
In the fifth, Torres came through for the home team once more as his two-out single drove in Mike Miller, who led off the inning with a single.
Cal Poly stretched the lead in the bottom of the seventh. Miller led off with a triple and scored on a sacrifice fly before Mitch Haniger tripled and scored on a Torres groundout, giving the Mustangs a 6-3 lead.
Anselment led the Husky offense, going 2-for-4 with an RBI. Torres finished the night 3-for-4 with five RBI, a double and a triple.
The Huskies and Mustangs meet again Saturday night at 6:00 p.m. and then complete the series with a 1:00 p.m. game on Sunday.
