SEATTLE - Three California pitchers, led by starter Jason Dennis, kept the Washington offense in check Saturday as the Golden Bears handed the Huskies their fifth straight conference loss, 5-2, at Husky Ballpark.
Dennis (3-1), a junior southpaw, held the Huskies to two runs on six hits and no walks through seven innings to pick up the victory. It was the longest outing of the year for Dennis, who red-shirted last season after elbow surgery. David Cash pitched an inning and third of shutout relief, and Matt Brown struck out the final two Huskies with the bases loaded in the ninth to record his sixth save.
Washington fell to 14-9 overall and 2-6 in the Pac-10 with the loss. Cal improved to 17-14, 4-4.
Up 2-0, Cal scored three runs in the fifth to take a 5-0 lead. John Baker singled to lead off that inning, moved to second on a groundout and scored on a Clint Hoover single. After Hoover stole second and Conor Jackson walked, a passed ball put runners at second and third. A sacrifice fly from Carson White plated Hoover and Jackson scored on a Spencer Wyman single.
Washington scored both of its runs in the sixth. Ben Miller singled to lead off and scored on Tila Reynolds' double. After moving to third on a groundout, Reynolds scored on a wild pitch. In the ninth, singles from Reynolds, Jay Garthwaite and Michael Done loaded the bases, but Brown fanned Bryan Johnson and John Otness to end the game.
Husky junior starter Zack Daniels fell to 2-1 with the loss. Junior Randy Vanderplow pitched four and one-third innings of shutout relief. Miller and Garthwaite each had two hits to pace the Huskies. Baker and right fielder Rob Meyer were the only Bears with two hits.
The Huskies will try to salvage a series split Sunday in a 1:00 p.m. game, which will air live in the Seattle area on KSRB AM-1150.
