SEATTLE - A two-run double from freshman Branden Berry broke a 2-2 tie in the seventh inning and lifted the Washington baseball team to a 5-2 win over Washington State Friday night at Husky Ballpark.

The win improved the UW's record to 29-24 overall and 12-16 in the Pac-12 while WSU fell to 27-27 and 11-17.

UW sophomore Tyler Kane (7-2) picked up the win with two and one-third scoreless innings of relief behind starter Aaron West, who gave up two runs on eight hits over six innings, striking out six.

WSU reliever Scott Simon (2-3) took the loss, giving up two runs (one earned) on three hits in his one-third of an inning.

Freshman Trevor Mitsui was 3-for-4 with two runs scored for the Huskies while B.K. Santy and Jacob Lamb each added two hits. WSU's Derek Jones led his team with three hits and two RBI.

The Huskies took advantage of a pair of two-out walks to score a run in the first. After two groundouts, Lamb and Berry drew free passes before a single to center from Chase Anselment drove in Lamb to give Washington a 1-0 lead.

In the third, the Huskies got singles from Mitsui and Santy to put runners at the corners with one out. It looked like the Cougars would get out of the jam unscathed when Jayce Ray send a ground ball to short, but the shortstop mishandled the ball for an error, allowing Mitsui to score on what likely would have been an inning-ending double play.

The Cougars finally broke through in the fifth. With bases loaded on two singles and a walk, Jones lofted a double the opposite way into the left-field corner, driving in a pair to tie the score at 2-2. With runners at second and third with one out, West struck out the next two WSU batters to end the threat with the score still tied.

In the seventh, the Huskies scored a pair to move back in front. After singles from Joe Meggs and Lamb, a passed ball put runners at second and third with one out. Berry followed by dropping a double just fair down the right-field line, scoring both runners to give the UW a 4-2 lead.

In the eighth, the UW got some insurance when Mitsui singled and eventually scored on a two-out single from Meggs.

The Huskies and Cougars continue the series Saturday with a 2:00 p.m. game at Husky Ballpark. Fans can follow live stats and watch live video, both for free, here at gohuskies.com.
