SEATTLE - The Washington baseball team used the longball for an 8-2, non-conference win over UC Riverside Friday at Husky Ballpark, as Ty Rasmussen, Matt Hague and Curt Rindal all homered to account for the Huskies' first six runs.
Husky starter Jorden Merry (6-3) regained the form that had him on a five-game winning streak earlier this year prior to losses in his last two starts, holding the Highlanders scoreless on four hits over six innings. He walked five and struck out four. Jason Erickson threw the final three innings to pick up his first save.
Washington improved its record to 17-15 on the season while UC Riverside fell to 21-13.
Riverside ace James Simmons (7-2) suffered the loss, giving up seven runs (four earned) on nine hits over five innings. Simmons, who entered the game with a 1.81 ERA and only seven walks and 38 hits allowed in 64 and two-thirds innings, issued three walks and struck out seven.
The Huskies took advantage of a two-out error to score three in the first. With two outs and a runner at first, Curt Rindal's hit a grounder to shortstop Jaime Pedroza, whose throw to second was wide. Rasmussen followed with his sixth home run of the season, driving a ball the other way to right field.
In the third, Jake Rife reached on an infield single to open the inning before Hague drove a pitch down the right-field line for his third homer of the year, staking the Huskies with a 5-0 lead.
Husky senior Curt Rindal led of the fifth by lining his eighth home run of the season over the fence in left-center field, increasing the edge to 6-0. Rasmussen followed by drawing a walk and eventually made it 7-0 when he scored on a single from Brett Kaluza.
With Merry out of the game, UC Riverside scored two runs in the seventh as Carl Uhl reached on a fielder's choice, stole second and scored on a single from Joey Gonzales, who later scored in on a sacrifice fly.
The series continues Saturday with a 2:00 p.m. game. Live video and live stats will be available at gohuskies.com.
