SEATTLE - The Washington Huskies rose two places to No. 7 in the Associated Press men's basketball poll released Monday, their highest ranking in 21 years.

Washington (10-0) was in the No. 9 spot last week. Oklahoma lost to drop from 7th to No. 14 and the Huskies leapfrogged No. 8 Gonzaga, a team they defeated 99-95 on Dec. 4.

The current No. 7 listing is the highest for a Husky team since they were ranked 7th on Dec. 18, 1984.

The last time UW was higher than 7th was a No. 6 ranking on Feb. 3, 1976. The current team's 10-0 record marks the school's best start since that 1975-76 squad won its first 14 games.

The highest ranking ever achieved by a Washington team was a No. 2 listing on Mar. 10, 1953, the same season UW made its only Final Four appearance.

The Huskies were unranked in this year's preseason AP poll before breaking into the first regular-season poll at the No. 25 spot on Nov. 21. UW was ranked 18th on Nov. 28, 13th on Dec. 5, 11th on Dec. 12 and 9th on Dec. 19.

Washington remained at the No. 7 position in the ESPN/USA Today coaches poll. The Huskies are the highest ranked Pac-10 team in both rankings. UCLA is No. 11 in those two polls.

Washington was slotted in the No. 10 spot in the AP poll on three occasions during the 2004-05 season before finishing No. 8 in the final rankings.

Pac-10 play begins this week for the Huskies who start the conference schedule against Arizona State on Thursday, Dec. 29. Tip-off is 7 p.m. Pacific Time at Bank of America Arena.

Defending conference tournament champion Washington clashes with 2005 regular-season champion Arizona in Seattle on Saturday, Dec. 31 at 11 a.m.
