  • ALSO: Haughian Named Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week

Washington pitcher Nick Haughian has been named a National Player of the Week after two-hit shutout last Friday vs. Arizona, Collegiate Baseball newspaper announced Monday.

On Tuesday, the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association concurred, naming Haughian the National Pitcher of the Week alongside Player of the Week Ryan Pond of North Carolina State.

Haughian, a junior lefty from Marysville, Wash., struck out a career-high 15 batters in the Huskies' 1-0 win over the Wildcats last Friday night in front of 5,187 fans at Safeco Field, home of the Seattle Mariners.

Also earning National Player of the Week honors from Collegiate Baseball was Kentucky center fielder Collin Cowgill.

The Huskies (20-9 overall, 3-3 in the Pac-10) take a six-game break from Pac-10 play, beginning tomorrow, Tuesday, when Portland (16-16) visits Husky Ballpark for a 5:00 p.m. game. The game will air live on radio at KIXI AM-880.

Freshman southpaw Geoff Brown (2-0, 4.76 ERA) will take the mound for the Huskies vs. Portland. This Thursday through Saturday, the UW will play host to Brigham Young (14-17) in a three-game series before traveling to face Gonzaga next Monday and Tuesday in Spokane.

The UW returns to Pac-10 play against No. 5 California April 18-20 in Berkeley.
