ETON DORNEY, United Kingdom - The first medal of any kind for a Husky athlete at the 2012 Olympics came when Adrienne Martelli and Megan Kalmoe earned a bronze medal in the women's quad on Wednesday morning.

Ukraine won the event on the 2,000-meter course with a time of 6:35.93. The United States was almost five seconds back at 6:40.63, comfortably in position for the bronze when they crossed the finish line. It was the first time a Husky has medaled in a sculling boat, a discipline usually dominated by the European countries.

Martelli and Kalmoe started the race on a strong note, trailing only the Ukrainians after the 500-meter mark. By the midway point, the Germans - who took silver - had begun to put pressure on the Americans, eventually overtaking them in the third 500.

For Martelli, this marked her first Olympic medal, which came just two years after graduating from Washington. This is also the first Olympic medal for Kalmoe, who also competed at the Beijing Olympics in 2008. Both athletes were walk-ons at Washington, continuing to further a legacy of Husky rowers who achieve Olympic success despite never rowing before college. Martelli and Kalmoe were also captains at UW.

"Thanks to everyone for the support," Martelli tweeted after the race. "So proud to be apart [sic] of @USOlympic @TeamUSAOlympic and excited to bring home a bronze medal."

Combined with win by the Canadian men's eight, the Huskies have now won five medals at these Olympics. And the Huskies aren't quite done. Mary Whipple is seeking her third medal on Thursday in the women's eight, which is set for another showdown with the Canadian W8+.

The Husky women's rowing program has a storied history at the Olympics, beginning with current head coach Bob Ernst leading the W8+ to gold in 1984. With the wins by Martelli and Kalmoe, this marks the eighth and ninth medals in the program's history.
