Box Score

GREENVILLE, N.C. - East Carolina fought back from a 3-0 deficit with one run in the seventh and five in the eighth to hand Washington its fifth straight loss, 6-3, Saturday at the ECU Invitational at Clark-LeClair Stadium.

Heading into eighth, ECU had managed just one run on four hits. However, the first eight batters in the inning reached basae with the first four scoring. After consecutive singles from Drew Schieber, Harrison Eldridge and Dale Mollenhauer loaded the bases, UW starter Nick Haughian was relieved by Elliott Cribby.

Stephen Batts, the first ECU hitter to face Cribby, tied the game with a two-run double and, after an intentional walk loaded the bases, Ryan Tousley chopped a two-run single over first base to give the Pirates a lead. Later in the inning, a sacrifice fly accounted for the final run.

Haughian (0-1) suffered the loss despite allowing only one hit over his first five and two-thirds innings. He ended up having allowed four runs on seven hits over seven-plus. Reliever Mike Flye (1-0) got the win and Shane Mathews picked up his second save for the Pirates (4-5). Washington fell to 0-5.

Washington used an error to jump out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first inning. Leadoff hitter Michael Burgher's popup to shallow left was dropped by second baseman Ryan Wood, allowing Burgher to reach second. Danny Cox followed with an RBI single to score the run. After moving to second on a balk, Cox scored on a two-out single from elft fielder Kyle Conley, staking the UW with a two-run lead.

It took until the sixth inning before Washington added to its lead. Bradley Boyer knocked his second double of the day with one out. After moving to third on a groundout, he scored on a wild pitching, stretching the Huskies' lead to 3-0.

ECU hadn't had a runner get past second base until the seventh inning. With one out, Ryan Tousley doubled to the right field corner and scored on a double from Corey Kemp, giving the hosts their first run.

Tuesday, the Huskies open a 12-game homestand with the 2007 home opener vs. Portland. First pitch is slated for 3:00 p.m.
