2006 NCAA Division I Women's Basketball Championship
Nashville First and Second Rounds
Memorial Gymnasium - Nashville, Tennessee
Friday, March 17 - News Conference
Head Coach June Daugherty
"We have tremendous respect for the Big Ten Conference and for Minnesota. At the same time, we've always tried to keep the focus on what we can control. We only have three players who were in the NCAA tournament in the past. We have to focus on what we've done to prepare to this point. I think we did a great job in our scheduling early in our pre-season to get out and go on the road. We were at Alabama and Florida. We came home and went right back out to Baylor and Texas A&M. I think these games, as well as the tremendous play we saw in the Big Ten Conference this year, have helped us prepare for this type of tournament and this type of situation. We can't control the experience level at this point in our program, but we can control the focus. I think we have prepared well with the type of competition we have played."
"Today was my first opportunity to see the court (at Memorial Gymnasium). Obviously, I've seen it on television several times. It's a beautiful facility. It's a lot more spacious than maybe it looks on TV. We've talked to our team a little bit about it--not necessarily the size--because they've played in big arenas, but because of the baseline aspect (benches are located on the ends of the court) and how that's a little bit different. It's something that until you get out there and practice and until you actually coach in that situation, I don't know how we're going to feel. It's a beautiful facility to play our first-round game and we're going to get out there and try to concentrate on Husky basketball and not where the bench is or where the coaches are."
Junior Guard Cameo Hicks
"Minnesota seems pretty similar to us, our style of play. They love to play pressure defense and we do the same. They're out to run. I would say we have similar attributes."
Senior Guard Kristen O'Neill
"We're here to play basketball and get down to business. We're excited to see the court."
"As a senior who has only been in the NCAA tournament one other time, I just appreciate this opportunity. I recognize this is something you don't get to do every year. As a sophomore I don't think I understood that. Not being able to go the last couple of years, I'm just excited to make the most of it and I know that my teammates are. It's going to be a great experience."
