Coach June Daugherty Post-game Quotes
Washington vs. Eastern Washington
December 12, 2005
General Comments: We're excited to be seven and two coming off the preseason schedule that we took on. I'm real proud of these kids. We are certainly excited about getting into the Pac-10 race in about nine days. We're trying to get though their finals and get them rested up a little bit and get out there on Thursday. We definitely have some areas that we have to improve upon and we'll work on those, but you know we forced 29 turnovers tonight, it's one of those games that you just have to get down in trenches and play great defense and we were able to do that. We fouled too much, obviously, but games like that sometimes it happens. I thought our kids just buckled down and got into the trenches and played good defense and we got it done.
On slow start: I think we didn't do a good job early. Our running game we got some great looks and did a nice job. I think we didn't do a good job of reversing the basketball and moving the ball a little bit more in the first half and trying to break down the defense of Eastern. I thought we slowed down and got a little more patient and with what was addressed I think the players did a good job responding but we just didn't do enough of that in the first half.
On Eastern: They played hard; they definitely played hard, they're a scrappy team. They took us out of our rhythm a little bit. But for us I think it was us just buckling down and playing hard. We've talked about this all year, just rely on your defense, count on your rebounding, get it done that way and things will come back to you. I thought Florence had a great spark on the O-Board on the free throw, and she got fouled, and hit some shots, she hit a three. There were different players that stepped up at different times and helped us. Like Kayla was saying there just wasn't a lot of flow to the game, it felt like there was a lot of stopping. But they did play hard and you have to give them credit.
On outlook after preseason: Well I have to say, we're seven and two and we've played a tremendous preseason and it's been everything that we thought it was going to be. I'm really proud of our players and we recognize that we're on our way to improvement. We have some areas that we have to execute better, especially offensively, obviously tonight, and I think our boxing out is not where it should be, so we have certainly some things to address and clean up before we get into that Cal game in nine days. That's where our focus is at but like I said we're seven and two and we've had some pretty tough competition and I'm excited about the direction we're going in.
On the pace of the game: "It was just one of those games where there was really no flow. I mean once a couple things got going and then it was back to maybe a turnover or not a good defensive stop or something like that. For the most part it was really hard to get in a flow tonight, but that happens sometimes. I think that we really used our experience to get the win."
On difficulty of getting into a flow: "It was just one of those games, one of those scrappy games, a lot of whistles, a lot of handling the ball situations. It was just one of those games, you just have to look past it and get ready for the Pac-10's."
On sloppiness of the game: "I would probably call it one of the sloppiest games this year, but sometimes you have to win that way. That's just a testament to our hard work, we weren't necessarily hitting all of our easy shots but we kept working hard enough that it got us the win."
On Pac-10 play: "We definitely are going to have to step up our game and everyone knows that, so that's what the plan is, we're going to step it up, continue to play hard, we're just going to work on executing our offense and defense. We know we have to step up, the Pac-10's are going to be very competitive this year and we're going to be excited about it."
