Washington vs. Utah
Post Game Quotes
Washington Head Coach June Daugherty
General Comments: "That basketball game was like burning the turkey on Thanksgiving. It was ugly, but sometimes you are going to have to win games like that. I am really proud of how our team buckled down in the second half, and came out with great intensity -- hustle plays. We were flying around getting stops, and forcing Utah to take some tough shots. It was a great win. A great win to beat a very good ranked team. Kim Smith is as good as advertised, and I am really excited for the team to be 3-0."
On defending their two All-Americans: "It is definitely by committee. We put some different size on them -- we put some smaller size, speed; we just tried to mix it up. That was the biggest, especially late in the game, you know they are going to go 3-point shooting, and we know that is their strength. That is why we have to get a hand up. They stretched us a little bit. Girls in the far corner are looking to throw it into the post. We just have to contest everything. They are just that good. We just kept working it, kept our intensity and pressure on the basketball up, and made sure every shot was contested. That was big for us coming down the stretch."
On playing against Utah: "Even though it wasn't the prettiest basketball game, we are going to control what we can control, and that is playing as hard as we can, and I thought we did that, especially in the second half. It gave us the game back. It got us into our running game. It got us running and jumping again -- getting down the floor. We had some spectacular plays. I thought Maggie O'Hara and Cameo Hicks had some unbelievable plays. Also the reverse by Breanne Watson -- it was fun seeing us stay with it, keep chipping away, and then the game came back to us. But Utah is a great team. They are really well-coached, and they have a lot of talent, with two All-Americans on one team. They are going to make us play this way. They are going to burn the clock up; they are going to stretch out defensively. They do a lot of great things. It is a test for us to stay sharp and keep things Husky basketball style, and don't get caught up in the pace that they want to play. First half we did, second half we got it back into our tempo."
On rebounds: "When I look down here I see 25 offensive rebounds for the second time in three games. And I think we got six or seven in the first possession. These guys are hungry. They are eager to get up there, and get a second shot, third shot, whatever it takes. One of the keys going into the game was controlling the glass, and being able to do that really paid off, especially with the shooting percentage we had going into the game."
On the tempo of the game: "We cannot control their tempo, and we cannot control what they are doing. We've got to turn it up on our end of things. We talked about it at halftime, about getting our intensity back up, and diving on the floor, start getting deflections. We had to start making things happen, so we can get back into our running game, and to get the tempo the way we wanted it, and I thought for the most part that we did that, and it is a great sign for this team."
On the offense: "That is one things that I was talking about earlier this week--our defense is ahead of our offense. I know the talented players that I have, and I know that the shots will fall. I like the fact that we went inside out, and ran inside out. We are going to keep doing that, we are going to keep playing our game. Like I said, the game will come to us offensively, but we are going to control what we can control, and that is the defense, the intensity, and the hustle plays."
On the 3-0 start:"I am excited for these guys. It is a very rigorous, challenging schedule. To go cross country like we did, and play back to back, and come home with those two victories, and turnaround and have those guys back here by midnight Sunday night, be back for class Monday, and a quick turnaround Tuesday, and then we are back out there. It is part of it. It is part of the schedule of the Pac-10 .We love it. Keep bringing them on. Every opportunity we have to go out and play, and to show what we are made of we are going to take it. Ranked or not ranked."
FORWARD Kristen O'Neill
On starting the season with three wins: "I'm just very proud of my teammates. I think everyone will look around in the locker room and the feeling this season as opposed to last season is just very different on the court. We do have a lot more experience and we're sticking together in times where last year we might have fallen apart or been affected more by other teams' runs. We're playing some great teams but it's just really fun to be a part of this team when you look out in your teammates eyes and everyone's so hungry and just wants to win and play hard for each other. It's something that's pretty special to be a part of. I'm excited we have three down and we're just looking to carry this momentum into the rest of our season."
GUARD Cameo Hicks
On rebounds: "I didn't really think I had fourteen rebounds. Every game I just try to go out there and crash the boards as hard as I can and sometimes it doesn't work out, but I guess tonight it did."
On Hicks scoring a lot of the points: "There are so many great players on this team; so many people that are capable of scoring that haven't necessarily done that yet. So, I'm excited to see other people step up and score because I know there are so many people on this team that can.
On the changes since last year: "We have so much leadership and so much depth and that's something we didn't necessarily have last season."
On Hicks' improvements this year: "Personally my biggest improvement that I've made is just my conditioning just trying to play hard and keep my intensity up for my team for forty minutes. I just hope to bring that intensity whenever I can.
On how she's gotten in shape: "I had a few minor setbacks this summer but I was able to condition and do a little bit of weights. All of us have been working hard all summer. We've all been committed to staying here over the summer and working out as a team.
On the way the team is ranked: "I think now they're changing their minds. We've definitely been working hard and it's been paying off. We haven't even really been shooting the ball really well or scoring as much as we can so we're only going to improve upon our previous performances. I'm excited to see how the Pac 10's turn out for us this year.
On the team reaching 600 wins: "Washington has a tremendous history especially with women's basketball. We kind of lost that last year just because we had some struggles with pulling out wins, but this year with our leadership and experience we've definitely had the knowledge and ability to pull out tough games down the stretch. I definitely think these last three wins that we got, I don't think we would have necessarily got them last year just because we didn't have the same skill and focus that we do this year.
On having beaten three credible teams: "That's just tremendous. It has given us a lot of confidence. The three schools that we've beaten have been very tough and they've all been in great leagues and as you know Utah was ranked, so it's given us a lot of confidence. We know that we can play with anyone and I'm really excited about that.
