SEATTLE - Arizona ace Kurt Heyer pitched a complete game and Joey Rickard knocked three doubles as the 13th-ranked Wildcats beat the Washington baseball team, 10-2, Friday night in the opener of a three-game, Pac-12 series at Husky Ballpark.
Arizona improved to 25-12 overall and 11-5 in the Pac-12, good for a tie atop the conference standings. Washington fell to 19-16 and 5-8 in conference play.
Heyer improved to 7-1 with his fourth complete game of the year and third in a row. He allowed two runs (one earned) on seven hits and two walks while striking out five. UW starter Aaron West (4-4) took the loss, giving up four runs on five hits over five and two-thirds.
Arizona got things going with two outs in the third to take the game's first lead. Center fielder Joey Rickard reached on a two-out walk and, after stealing second, he scored on a Johnny Field single to give the Wildcats a 1-0 advantage.
In the fourth, right fielder Robert Refsnyder led off by lining a homer to left-center, his fourth of the season, upping the Arizona lead to 2-0.
In the fifth, the Wildcats used another two-out rally to score two more runs. With two outs and none on, Rickard doubled, Field walked and Alex Mejia reached on an infield single to load the bases. The next pitch bounced past the catcher, allowing Rickard to score. After an intentional walk re-loaded the bases, Seth Mejias-Brean drew a walk to force in a fourth run.
In the seventh, the Wildcats scored six more runs to put the game away. Rickard opened the inning with his second double and scored on a Mejia double. Refsnyder followed with a single to drive in Mejia and then scored on a two-out double from Bobby Brown to stretch the lead to 7-0.
A Trent Gilbert singled scored another run and Rickard hit his second double of the inning and his third of the game to plate two more.
In the ninth, a two-out double from Washington catcher Ryan Wiggins drove in two runs to break up Heyer's shutout bid.
UW catcher B.K. Santy led the Husky hitters, finishing 2-for-3.
The Wildcats and Huskies square off again Saturday with a 2:00 game and wrap up the series Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
