LOS ANGELES - The Washington baseball team continually answered the bell, mounting several comebacks, but the Huskies were unable to reel in USC, falling 10-5 to the Trojans Saturday afternoon at Dedeaux Field.
Washington fell to 28-27 on the season and 10-15 in Pac-10, with only one game remaining in the regular season. USC improved to 27-32 overall and 6-20 in the conference.
USC reliever Chad Smith (5-6), entered the game in the fifth and worked one and two-thirds no-hit innings for the victory. Husky starter Andrew Kittredge (7-7) allowed four runs on seven hits over three and one-third innings for the loss.
Washington scored a run in the top of the first to grab the early advantage. Caleb Brown drew a walk to open the game, moved to second on a bunt and then scored on a double from Lamb.
But the Trojans answered with three runs of their own in the first. After the bases filled on a single and two walks, Kittredge got a strikeout, but then allowed three runs to score by allowing a single and hitting two batters to force in runs, giving the Trojans a 3-1 lead after one.
In the third, Lamb drew the Huskies to within a run when he hit his fourth home run of the year
In the bottom of the third, USC once again loaded the bases with no outs, but were held to only one run, on an Adam Landecker sacrifice fly, to increase the Trojans' lead to 4-2.
Washington cut it to a run once more in the fifth as Brown singled and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly in the fifth. However, USC once again loaded the bases in the sixth. After a Joe De Pinto sacrifice fly scored one, a walk re-loaded the bases and two more free passes each pushed a run across, making it a 7-3 score.
Once again, the momentum swung back to the Huskies. In the seventh, Doug Cherry and Lamb reached on one-out singles. After each moving up a base on a wild pitch, both came in to score when freshman right fielder Chase Anselment doubled into the left-center field gap.
But USC put the game away in the eighth as catcher Keith Castillo led off the inning with a home run and later, left fielder Alex Glenn belted a two-run homer to make it a 10-5 Trojans lead.
Cherry and shortstop David Bentrott each added two hits for the Huskies, who equaled the Trojans' hits total of 13.
Washington and USC wrap up the regular season Sunday with a 1:00 p.m. game at Dedeaux Field.
