Louisville, Ky. - Washington tailback Jesse Callier has been named to the 2012 Paul Hornung Award Watch List, the Louisville Sports Commission announced Thursday. The Paul Hornung Award, now in its third season, is given annually to the most versatile player in major college football.
Callier, a junior from Downey, Calif., was one of 49 players and 10 from the Pac-12 Conference listed. The Watch List is comprised of 25 seniors, 16 juniors and eight sophomores, representing 44 universities and 10 conferences that are part of the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS).
Callier served as a backup to Chris Polk at tailback last season, and an invaluable special teams performer. Callier's 23-yard career kick return average stands as No. 8 in Husky history, and his blocked punt returned for a TD won the Apple Cup Big Play of the Game Award at the team's postseason banquet.
The Huskies open the 2012 season Sept. 1 vs. San Diego State at CenturyLink Field.
The Hornung Award field will be narrowed to a small group of finalists in early December. The Winner will be selected in early January.
