UW Crews Win Five Events at Husky Open

SEATTLE - With the top Washington crews competing in San Diego, the rest of the Husky fleet demonstrated its depth by winning five of the six races in which they were entered, Saturday at the Husky Open on the Montlake Cut.

The annual card of 2,000-meter races included collegiate crews from UW, Gonzaga, Washington State and Western Washington along with numerous rowing clubs from throughout the region.

Washington won the featured men's race with an open-water victory over two other UW entries and Western Washington in the men's varsity event. The Huskies completed the course in 6-minutes, 0.82-seconds followed by a second (6:08.05) and third (6:14.84) UW boat and fourth-place Western Washington (6:32.29).

The Husky men were also victorious in the varsity four race with a time of 6:37.12.

Three UW crews won races on the women's side, including the varsity four, novice eight and novice four boats.

Washington State finished first in the women's varsity eight event. The Cougars crossed the finish line in 6:54.9 followed by Washington in 7:03.6.

In club racing, Green Lake Crew won five of the seven races for juniors. Green Lake men's crews won the lightweight eight, varsity eight and junior varsity eight events while their women were victors in the varsity eight and junior varsity eight races.

Mount Baker finished first in the women's lightweight eight race and Lakeside won the men's junior lightweight four event.

The Huskies compete on the Montlake Cut again next Saturday, hosting Washington State in their annual dual regatta at 9 a.m.
