LOS ANGELES - UCLA ace Josh Karp out-dueled Husky senior Jeff Carlsen to lead the Bruins to a 4-2 win over Washington Friday night in a Pac-10 game at Jackie Robinson Stadium.

Karp, a junior from Bothell, improved to 4-0 with the victory. The right-hander, considered one of the nation's top college prospects, allowed only one run on five hits over seven innings. UCLA improved to 23-12 overall and 5-6 in the Pac-10. The UW fell to 19- 12 and 3-8.

The Bruins scratched a run in the bottom of the first without the benefit of a hit. Josh Canales reached when he swung at a pitch in the dirt for strike three, but the ball got away far enough for him to make it to first. After stealing second, Canales moved to third on a flyout and scored on a sacrifice fly from Brian Baron.

The Bruins had another chance to score in the fourth when a walk and a double put runners at second and third with no outs. Carlsen, however, fielded a groundout back to the mound for the first out before striking out Eric Reece and Adam Berry to end the threat.

The UW finally drew even in the sixth. Jay Garthwaite got it started with a two-out double and then came around on a single from Tyler Davidson to tie the game at 1-1. UCLA, however, would get back on top in the bottom of the sixth when Canales scored on a double from Matt Pearl, chasing Carlsen from the game.

Pearl would score to make it 3-1 when Baron singled off of UW reliever Matt Gardner. Carlsen (2-1), the Husky senior still coming back from off-season shoulder surgery, allowed only three hits and three runs in five-plus innings of work, striking out six along the way.

UW third baseman Michael Done connected for a solo homer in the eighth, his fifth of the season, off of Bruin reliever Mike Kunes. UCLA posted a fourth run in the bottom of the eighth to add some insurance and Kevin Jerkens pitched a perfect ninth for his fourth save.

The Huskies and Bruins close out the three-game series Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. game.
