AUSTIN, Texas - Freshman pole vaulter McKane Lee on Thursday became the 20th Husky to qualify for the 2004 NCAA West Regional Championships, clearing 16 feet, 4 3/4 inches on the second day of competition at the 77th-Annual Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays.
The four-day meet at Texas' Mike A. Myers Stadium, which began Wednesday, features 125 events and more than 5,000 athletes, including five Olympic gold medalists.
A graduate of Arlington (Wash.) High School, Lee cleared the qualifying height on his second attempt, before missing on all three attempts at 16-10 1/2 to finish in a tie for 10th. Justin Sutton of Texas A&M won the event at 17-4 1/2; Washington's Sam Roberts was 15th at 15-11.
The Huskies will have five athletes in action Friday, including freshman hurdler Ashley Lodree, who will be seeking to lower the school record of 13.43 she set in her first collegiate 110-meter hurdles final last weekend.
