SEATTLE - Six pitchers combined to throw a three-hit shutout and Husky batters pounded out 22 hits as the Washington baseball team beat Southern Utah, 17-0, at Husky Ballpark Sunday, completing a three-game series sweep.
The Huskies' top highlight probably came from senior starting pitcher Jeff Carlsen (1-0), who made his first appearance of the year after recovering from off-season shoulder surgery. Carlsen worked three perfect innings, striking out six of the nine batters he faced.
In the process, Carlsen, a 6-foot-7 righty from Poulsbo, became only the third Husky ever to record more than 200 strikeouts (202) and took over sole possession of second place in career wins, with his 23rd. By college rule, a starter may earn a win despite pitching fewer than five innings if his number of innings is pre-determined.
The Huskies (9-3) jumped in front from the start, scoring six runs in both the first and second inning. The first seven UW batters got on board to start the game, and freshman DH Mike Wagner had a pair of two-run singles before the second inning was over. UW second baseman Marc Rittenhouse, who went 4-for-4 before leaving the game, was 3-for-3 with two doubles in the first two innings alone.
Wagner finished the day 3-for-4 with four RBI. Right fielder Jay Garthwaite was 2-for-4 with three RBI and first baseman Bryan Johnson batted 3-for-5 with four runs batted in. The Huskies got solo home runs from catcher Jefferson Thiel and first baseman Duggan Moran, who replaced Johnson. In all, 24 Huskies played in the game.
The Thunderbirds' only three hits on the day were two singles from Curtis Jacobsen and a another from Ken Parker. Justin Kittrell (0-5) took the loss for Southern Utah (1-15).
The Huskies take the week off for finals before opening Pac-10 Conference play next Saturday through Monday vs. USC at Husky Ballpark.
